A DAY WITH ALI & ANDREA

Celebrating like-minded creatives and
progressive thinkers who, like CH, have no label.
Ali Gallefoss & Andrea Evjen, Norwegians artist and
in becoming lawyer, wear pieces from CATHRINE HAMMEL
S/S 22 collection and talk to us about life, homemaking and
their future aspirations as a couple.

We met a sunny winter morning with Ali and Andrea in the heart of the St. Hanshaugen
neighborhood of Oslo. The young creative couple moved together to Oslo in 2018.
They live today into a hybrid place, between a storage and showroom for Ali’s objects,
that they call Home.
It’s a safe, sheltered and warm space where they relax and recharge.
The place is strategically organized according to the view, with a sofa placed in the
middle of the room to contemplate the changing skies.

HOMEMAKING

“Andrea: Our apartment is located in the heart of St. Hanshaugen. We have a great view, and from our balcony we can see all the way to Ekeberg. The space is organized according to the view, with the sofa placed in the middle of the room pointing outwards so we can see the sky change color during the day. Even though it’s a rental, it feels like home. We try to keep it minimalistic, carefully selecting pieces and taking time for consideration so we won’t overconsume.

Ali: Our home has mostly been a hybrid between a storage and showroom for my objects, Andrea is patient and have endured that the home environment is changing when I sell something or make something new.

Do you have a favorite object?

Andrea: I´m fond of everything Ali has made, but I must say the dining table, as we have spent many dinners and evenings with good friends around this. We bought it cheap on Finn, sanded and oiled it, and I think turned out very nice. Over the years, it has been marked by red wine stains and paint, but I believe that furniture is there to be used.

Ali: The Noguchi lamp.”

ABOUT LIFE IN OSLO

“Andrea: Oslo is a big city in a small-town format where you can choose to live the life you want – whether it involves frequent restaurant visits and clubbing on weekdays, or a quieter lifestyle with field trips and neighborhood barbecues. Or both, if you like.

Ali: Having spent most of my life in Bergen, I like the fact that Oslo is both large and small at the same time, with short distances between the different city districts. The city houses a lot of creative people dedicated to their craft, whether it is music, art, or food.”

A favorite place in town?

Rouleur, Java, Kolonialen, Fuglen, Hrimnir Ramen, Vesuvio Pizza, Jungle Pizza… There are so many good places and it’s hard to pick just one.

ASPIRATIONS & EVERYDAY RITUALS

What do you dream about?

“Andrea: To live a long and fulfilling life with those I love.

Ali: We are in a nice place now. Andrea is at the beginning of her career, and so am I. Before, I always had large goals and plans for my future. Like most young men, I dreamt of materialistic achievements, which is no longer a goal. Now, the path I am walking is like the one in Hansel and Gretel – I just follow the different crumbles that appears on the road in front of me.

If you could, you would?

Andrea: Take a sabbatical and travel the world.

Ali: Take an art residency abroad. A positive side effect of the pandemic is that people that work in front of a screen, like my dear girlfriend, have gotten more freedom to work from “home”. So, let’s say half a year in Portugal maybe? I will just manifest it right now.

At the moment you are into?

Andrea: Yoga.

Ali: Books. I have read two this year already, and I have started on three others. Note: I am not a reader.”

A memorable trip?

Andrea: In September 2019, we took a spontaneous road trip to Berlin to celebrate Ali´s birthday. We were five people squeezed together in a tiny Tesla for several long hours. Definitely a memorable trip.

Ali: Paris in January 2020. I finally got to show Andrea the city I traveled to frequently between 2012-2015 as a buyer for Vincci. A truly inspiring place for everything cultural, that early widened my perception of what art, design and spatial design can be.

A common playlist?

No, we usually take turns queuing songs.

Last book?

Andrea: Breath by James Nestor.

Ali: 18 samtaler med Arne Næss – Hvor kommer virkeligheten fra?

WHAT’S NEXT

Andrea: I´m currently working on getting my legal license. Apart from that, I prefer to live day by day and take life as it comes. A full schedule stress me out. But I hope to be able to buy an apartment with Ali soon. I would also like to travel more this year and visit friends abroad.

Ali: From now until summer I will spend most of my time at my uncle’s farm at Gallefoss, working on my master thesis. In March I have an exhibition at QB Gallery. I have also been assigned the role as “head of art” for Oslo Runway where I, among other things, am planning an outdoor exhibition together with Pytonsite.”
