Spring/Summer 2018 – «The Get Down»

“I wanted a change. Something new. Both in terms of colors, shapes and materials. I wanted to experiment. We started with the a-shape from a 70s flared pants and tried to find a potential in the mere shape. What would happen if “The Get Down” from the 70s Bronx collides with Scandinavian functionalism? What would happen if we extracted the a-shape from flared pants and transferred the mere shape to a blouse? What would happen if we kept the strong color palette from the 70s sportswear, but made the garments in a more delicate material?”.

- Cathrine Hammel, Creative Director

Hibiscus red, plain orange and sunlight yellow. An explosion of colors juxtaposed with subtle garments and flared pants characterizes Cathrine Hammel`s Spring/Summer 2018 collection: You will see mélange rib overalls in orange, flared pants in strong colors such as orange and yellow. An a-shaped safari suit, a thin nylon windbreaker and wide deconstructed utility pants in cotton material. The late 70s theme is visual in every aspect of the collection. Easy-use fabrics, comfortable silhouettes, strong colors, sporty details and a free spirit.

The experiment started when Cathrine Hammel received the TV-series «The Get Down» from an old friend last autumn. Reminiscing the playful spirit from the late 70s – especially Bronx in the heydays of hip hop, breakdance, graffiti and dj-culture. Listening to Grandmaster Flash and Dj Kool Herc. Looking at early graffiti from TAKI 183, Phase 2 and SAMO (Basquiat). By breaking the rules and experimenting, they created a new subculture for generations to come. New ways of dancing, new ways of listening to music, new ways of dressing. The style was not about gender, race, age or class. It was about freedom. It was about mixing different expressions. They experimented and created something new - together.

“I was intrigued by the playfulness and the free spirit from the late 70s Bronx era. By mixing expressions and experimenting together in a communal way, something new was created. We wanted to experiment in our own little universe, and this collection is an experiment with garments, colors and shapes.”
